At IFA, Shelly is presenting the latest developments from its Gen3 and Gen4 smart home product lines. Both generations impress with their advanced features that enable flexible, reliable, and secure automation from private homes to professional applications. The devices feature powerful Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity as well as modern energy monitoring and security integration functions that offer a wide range of control options. Gen4 models come with built-in support for Matter and Zigbee. You can switch between Matter and Zigbee either directly on the device or through the device’s web UI. For selected Gen3 devices, Matter can be enabled and support is gradually being rolled out to other Gen3 models.. This ensures maximum flexibility and seamless integration into existing smart home systems.
Shelly Gen3 and Gen4: impressive similarities
Both generations offer advanced features that make even complex smart home setups effortless. These include Wi-Fi connectivity in the 2.4 GHz range and Bluetooth support for particularly easy setup. In addition, Gen3 and Gen4 devices feature powerful scripting capabilities that benefit from a faster chip and increased Flash memory - upgraded from 4 MB to 8 MB. This allows scripts to run faster and store more, enabling advanced custom automation, along with enhanced energy monitoring and integrated security features. The devices continue to offer flexible control options via MQTTS, HTTP/HTTPS webhooks, cloud connections, and virtual components, allowing them to integrate seamlessly into existing systems. In addition, products from both generations offer a key-value store (KVS) for local data storage and timer functions that allow the devices to be switched on and off on a schedule. Both generations also support simultaneous operation as an access point and Wi-Fi client and can be used as Wi-Fi range extenders – with Gen4, this function is extended to Zigbee networks. KNX is also available in selected products of both generations. Gen3 and Gen4 devices can also be used as Bluetooth gateways for the Shelly BLU line (with the exception of the Shelly BLU TRV).
Despite these similarities, the Shelly Gen4 series, which was introduced in early 2025, brings several significant improvements: It additionally supports Wi-Fi 6,has higher computing power, and double the flash capacity for more complex applications. The Gen4 thus offers maximum flexibility for users who want to integrate Zigbee into their automation systems in addition to Wi-Fi. Those who continue to rely exclusively on Wi-Fi-based automation will find a powerful solution with a broad product portfolio in the Gen3 series.
With the new products at IFA, Shelly is demonstrating how versatile and flexible modern smart home solutions can be: Whether Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Matter, or Zigbee—the devices of both generations offer maximum compatibility, easy integration, and high performance for both private and professional applications. Shelly is thus opening up new ways for its customers to customize the automation of their homes or buildings while relying on reliable, high-quality technology.
